Background
GTP-binding proteins are GTPases that function as molecular switches, alternating between active (GTP-bound) and inactive (GDP-bound) states. When a ligand binds to a G-protein-linked receptor, it triggers the exchange of GDP for GTP, activating the protein to transmit downstream signals. The signal ends when the G protein hydrolyzes GTP back to GDP, allowing the protein to revert to its inactive state. This mechanism enables controlled and transient signaling within the cell.
