Background
This gene belongs to the homeobox family of genes, which encode a highly conserved family of transcription factors involved in morphogenesis across multicellular organisms. Mammals possess four similar homeobox gene clusters—HOXA, HOXB, HOXC, and HOXD—located on different chromosomes and consisting of 9 to 11 tandemly arranged genes.
The HOXC11 gene, located within the HOXC cluster on chromosome 12, binds to the promoter element of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase and may play a role in early intestinal development. An alternatively spliced variant encoding a shorter isoform has been described, though its full-length nature remains undetermined.
