Background

This gene belongs to the subfamily of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). The hnRNPs are RNA-binding proteins that complex with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins are associated with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and influence pre-mRNA processing, mRNA metabolism, and transport. Although most hnRNPs are nuclear, some shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The protein encoded by this gene contains two quasi-RRM domains that bind RNAs and is localized in nuclear bodies. It participates in RNA splicing and plays a role in heat shock-induced splicing arrest by transiently leaving hnRNP complexes. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants are known.
