Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the folate receptor (FOLR) family, located on chromosome 11. These receptors have a high affinity for folic acid and related derivatives, mediating delivery of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate into cells. FOLR2 shares 68% and 79% sequence homology with FOLR1 and FOLR3, respectively. Initially thought to be placenta-specific, FOLR2 is also expressed in other tissues and may play a role in methotrexate transport in synovial macrophages of rheumatoid arthritis patients. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
