HCV는 Flaviviridae 계통의 양성 단일가닥 RNA 바이러스로, 약 10,000 뉴클레오타이드로 구성된 유전체를 가지고 있습니다. 이 유전체는 약 3,000개의 아미노산으로 이루어진 단일 폴리프로틴을 암호화하며, 숙주 및 바이러스 프로테아제에 의해 세 개의 주요 구조 단백질과 여러 비구조 단백질로 절단되어 바이러스 복제에 필요합니다. 다양한 유전형이 존재하며, 이는 인터페론 알파 치료 반응의 차이와 관련이 있습니다.
