Target Information
This gene encodes a highly conserved nonhistone protein, a member of the heterochromatin protein family. It is enriched in heterochromatin and associated with centromeres.
The protein contains:
- N-terminal chromodomain: binds histone proteins via methylated lysine residues
- C-terminal chromo shadow-domain: responsible for homodimerization and interaction with chromatin-associated nonhistone proteins
It plays an important role in epigenetic regulation of chromatin structure and gene expression.
Several pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1, 3, and X. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
