The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, which regulates various cellular processes such as cell growth, differentiation, mitosis, and oncogenic transformation.
This receptor-type PTP has extracellular, transmembrane, and intracellular catalytic domains. It is closely related to PTPRN/IA-2β and is a major autoantigen associated with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct proteins have been reported.
