Target Information
IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor and immune interferon produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens, mitogens, and cytokines.
It is a dimeric glycoprotein (~45 kDa) composed of two 146 amino acid subunits, exhibiting species-specific biological activity.
Human IFN gamma does not cross-react with mouse IFN gamma.
Functions include:
- Antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity
- Induction of MHC class I and II expression
- Macrophage activation
- Enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes
IFN gamma acts via the JAK-STAT signaling pathway and is regulated by various cytokines (upregulated by IL2, FGF basic, EGF; downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN).
Mutations in the IFN gamma gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
