Target Information
Recent studies have shown that overexpression of Transmembrane protein 18 (TMEM18) enhances the tropism of neural stem cells (NSCs) for gliomas. TMEM18 overexpression increases NSC migration capacity toward glioblastoma cells both in vitro and in vivo. Functional inactivation of TMEM18 leads to loss of migration activity, suggesting TMEM18 as a potential target in NSC-based glioma therapy. Additionally, TMEM18 loci are associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and obesity, indicating a possible CNS-related role in obesity predisposition. Multiple isoforms of TMEM18 are known to exist.
