Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. These subunits form part of the membrane skeletal proteins involved in spectrin-actin network assembly in erythrocytes and epithelial cell junctions.

• Alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, while beta adducin is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Adducin was initially purified as an alpha-beta heterodimer from human erythrocytes.
• Polymorphisms in adducin subunits are linked to blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
• Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular N-terminal region and a protease-sensitive C-terminal region containing phosphorylation sites, calmodulin-binding sites, and spectrin/actin association sites.
• Multiple alternatively spliced beta adducin mRNAs have been described, encoding different isoforms with partially unknown functions.
