Target Information

The NDUFS4 gene encodes an accessory subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), or NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase. Complex I is the first multi-subunit enzyme complex of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and plays a vital role in cellular ATP production—the primary energy source for many essential cellular processes. It transfers electrons from NADH through a series of redox centers to ubiquinone, generating a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane that drives ATP synthesis. Complex I consists of at least 41 subunits, with 7 encoded by mitochondrial DNA and the remainder by nuclear genes.
