Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by ABCB4 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven subfamilies: ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, and White.
ABCB4 belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is associated with multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. This gene encodes a full transporter and member of the p-glycoprotein family of membrane proteins, with phosphatidylcholine as its substrate. Although its precise function is not fully determined, it may participate in phospholipid transport from liver hepatocytes into bile. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms of undetermined function.
