Target Information
MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, AMINE OXIDASE (FLAVIN-CONTAINING) B, is encoded by the MAOB gene located on Xp11.3.
It is a member of the flavin monoamine oxidase family and catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines.
MAOB plays a crucial role in the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.
It preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine, and also degrades dopamine.
MAO-B inhibition enhances dopamine activity and reduces hydrogen peroxide production, contributing to neuroprotection.
