Target Information
Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus in the family Reoviridae.
Five species of rotavirus (A–E) cause disease in animals, with species A being the most common in humans. Within rotavirus A, different strains (serotypes) are classified based on two surface proteins.
Six structural proteins (VPs) form the virion, and six non-structural proteins (NSPs) are expressed in infected cells.
Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhea among infants and young children, characterized by vomiting, watery diarrhea, and low-grade fever. It remains a significant cause of mortality in developing countries.
