Target Information
REST (RE1-Silencing Transcription Factor, also known as NRSF) is a transcriptional repressor that binds to the neuron-restrictive silencer element (NRSE) and represses neuronal gene transcription in non-neuronal cells. It restricts neuronal gene expression by associating with corepressors mSin3 and CoREST, recruiting histone deacetylase to REST-regulated promoters. REST mediates repression by recruiting the BHC complex at RE1/NRSE sites, which deacetylates and demethylates histones, acting as a chromatin modifier.
