Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis with energy dissipated as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate the transfer of anions across the mitochondrial membrane and reduce membrane potential in mammalian cells. UCPs exhibit tissue-specific expression; UCP1 is expressed only in brown adipose tissue, which functions to produce heat.
