Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family.
UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak).
They facilitate anion transfer between mitochondrial membranes and modulate proton flow, reducing membrane potential in mammalian cells.
UCPs exhibit tissue-specific expression; UCP1 is expressed only in brown adipose tissue, specialized for heat production.
