Target Information
Heterochromatin protein-1 (HP1) is a methyl-lysine binding protein localized at heterochromatin sites, mediating gene silencing. Mammalian methyltransferases that methylate histone H3 on lysine-9 create a binding site for HP1 proteins, which are involved in gene silencing and chromatin structure. HP1 recognition of methylated histone H3 requires a functional chromodomain, serving as a specific motif for the methyl epitope. In vivo, HP1 association with heterochromatin is lost in Suv39h double-mutant mouse fibroblasts but restored with catalytically active SUV39H1 HMTase.
