Target Information
Olfactory marker protein (OMP) is an abundant, 19-kDa cytosolic protein almost exclusively expressed in mature, functioning olfactory neurons but not in neural precursor basal cells. The OMP gene structure and protein sequence are highly conserved between mouse, rat, and human. Its tissue-specific expression in receptor cells and knockout studies indicate that OMP is a modulatory component of odor detection and signal transduction. It may act as a modulator of the olfactory signal-transduction cascade and interacts with BEX1 and BEX2. OMP is uniquely associated with mature olfactory receptor neurons and belongs to the olfactory marker protein family.
