Target Information
L1RE1 encodes a nucleic acid-binding protein essential for retrotransposition of LINE-1 elements in the genome. These proteins act as nucleic acid chaperones, binding their own transcript and preferentially mobilizing it. Long interspersed element-1 (LINE-1/L1) retrotransposons are abundant in the human genome, with over 500,000 full or truncated copies. Although most are inactive, approximately 80–100 elements may remain active in an individual. An active LINE-1 encodes two proteins translated from a single RNA containing two non-overlapping ORFs: ORF1 and ORF2.
