Target Information

This gene produces multiple transcript variants differing in their first exons. Two variants encode isoforms that inhibit CDK4 kinase, while another variant encodes an alternate reading frame (ARF) protein that stabilizes p53 by interacting with MDM2. Despite structural differences, all variants contribute to cell cycle G1 control through CDK4 and p53 regulation. The gene is frequently mutated or deleted in various tumors and functions as an important tumor suppressor.
