Target Information
The PCDHA1 gene is part of the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters located on chromosome 5. This cluster contains 15 cadherin superfamily genes, including 13 highly similar and 2 more distantly related coding sequences.
Each gene has a tandem array of variable exons followed by shared constant exons. These encode neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins that are integral membrane components, likely involved in the formation and maintenance of specific cell-cell connections in the brain.
Alternative splicing has been observed, and additional variants have been suggested, though their full-length forms remain to be fully characterized.
