Target Information
Neurofibromin is a member of the GTPase-activating (GAP) class of proteins. These proteins enhance the GTPase activity of signaling G-proteins such as Ras. The NF1 gene functions as a tumor suppressor, and mutations at the NF1 locus have been associated with neurofibromas, rhabdomyosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, mental retardation, and memory deficiency. Neurofibromin also associates with intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton and is expressed at high levels during desmosome formation. Mutations in NF1 can lead to variable cell sizes and morphologies.
