Target Information
CBS (Cystathionine β-synthase) is the only known pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that contains heme.
It plays an important role in hydrogen sulfide regulation, particularly in the brain, using cysteine instead of serine to catalyze hydrogen sulfide formation.
Hydrogen sulfide acts as a gasotransmitter with signaling and cytoprotective effects, functioning as a neuromodulator to protect neurons against hypoxic injury.
