Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes. AR signaling is crucial for male reproductive organ development and also functions in muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It is a phosphoprotein involved in MAP kinase regulation, and its phosphorylation state correlates with MEK1/2 pathway activity. Abnormal AR signaling is linked to diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
