Target Information
MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, or AMINE OXIDASE (FLAVIN-CONTAINING) B, is a protein encoded by the MAOB gene in humans. It belongs to the flavin monoamine oxidase family and is mapped on Xp11.3.
- Catalyzes oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines
- Regulates metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the CNS and peripheral tissues
- Preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine
- Also degrades dopamine, influencing neurotransmitter balance and reactive oxygen species production
- MAO-B inhibition enhances dopamine activity and reduces oxidative stress
