Background
Nucleocytoplasmic transport, a signal- and energy-dependent process, occurs through nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS) are imported via importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins). Importin alpha binds NLS-containing cargo in the cytoplasm, while importin beta facilitates docking to the nuclear pore complex. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with its cargo, whereas importin beta remains at the pore. The KPNA6 gene encodes a member of the importin alpha family. [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
