Background
This gene encodes a nuclear protein involved in homologous recombination, telomere length maintenance, and DNA double-strand break repair. The Mre11 protein exhibits 3′ to 5′ exonuclease and endonuclease activity and forms a complex with RAD50, which is essential for nonhomologous end joining of DNA ends. This complex enhances single-stranded DNA endonuclease and exonuclease activities. Together with a DNA ligase, Mre11 promotes the joining of noncomplementary DNA ends using short homologies near the fragment termini. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 3, and alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
