Background
This gene encodes a member of the MutS family of proteins involved in DNA mismatch repair and meiotic recombination. The protein participates in segregation fidelity and crossing-over events during meiosis and promotes ionizing radiation-induced apoptosis. It forms hetero-oligomers with MSH4, and polymorphisms in this gene have been linked to diseases such as IgA deficiency, common variable immunodeficiency, and premature ovarian failure. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and read-through transcription occurs with the downstream C6orf26 gene (RefSeq, Feb 2011).
