Background
This gene encodes a member of the SLC25 family of nuclear-encoded transporters localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Members of this superfamily are involved in various metabolic pathways and cellular functions. Genome-wide association studies have linked MTCH2 to obesity-related loci, showing high expression in white adipose tissue and adipocytes, suggesting a regulatory role in adipocyte differentiation and metabolism. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms, and recent studies indicate this gene undergoes stop codon readthrough, generating an additional C-terminally extended isoform.
