Target Information
This gene encodes a secreted, homodimeric glycoprotein expressed in many tissues, potentially functioning in autocrine or paracrine signaling. The protein contains 11 conserved cysteine residues and is phosphorylated by protein kinase C on serine residues. It may regulate renal and intestinal calcium/phosphate transport, cell metabolism, and homeostasis. Overexpression in mice leads to high serum phosphate, dwarfism, and increased metabolic rate. Altered expression is observed in hepatocellular, ovarian, and breast cancers.
