Target Information
The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor family. Its activity is mediated by G proteins which activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. The receptor consists of 389 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 43 kDa.
The oxytocin-oxytocin receptor system plays a critical role in uterine contraction during parturition and milk ejection. Oxytocin receptors are expressed in the mammary gland myoepithelial cells, and in both the myometrium and endometrium of the uterus at the end of pregnancy. Additionally, oxytocin receptors are present in the central nervous system, mediating various behaviors such as maternal bonding, social recognition, sexual and aggressive behaviors, and responses to stress and anxiety.
