Target Information
This gene belongs to the type IV, cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. Cyclic nucleotides act as second messengers regulating various cellular responses to extracellular signals such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDE enzymes regulate cellular concentrations of cyclic nucleotides and thus play a key role in signal transduction. PDE4B specifically hydrolyzes cAMP, and altered activity has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Multiple splice variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
