Target Information
The PDE4B gene belongs to the type IV, cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. Cyclic nucleotides are key second messengers regulating various cellular responses to extracellular signals such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDEs modulate intracellular cyclic nucleotide levels, playing a crucial role in signal transduction. This gene encodes a protein that hydrolyzes cAMP specifically, and its altered activity has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Multiple splice variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
