Target Information
The C4B gene encodes complement factor 4, a key component of the classical activation pathway.
This protein is produced as a precursor and cleaved into a trimer (alpha, beta, gamma chains) prior to secretion.
It mediates interactions between antigen-antibody complexes and complement components.
Cleavage of the alpha chain releases C4 anaphylatoxin, an inflammation mediator.
Deficiency of C4B is linked to systemic lupus erythematosus.
The gene is located in the MHC class III region on chromosome 6 and may exist in multiple haplotypes (1–3 copies).
Variants include long and short forms due to the presence or absence of a 6.4 kb HERV-K retrovirus in intron 9.
