Target Information

DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA.
It functions as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) and inducing local chromatin-loop remodeling.
SATB2 also serves as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes, recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) to promoters and enhancers.
It is essential for initiating upper-layer neuron (UL1) genetic programs and repressing deep-layer (DL) and UL2-specific genes, likely through modulation of BCL11B expression.
SATB2 acts as a repressor of Ctip2 and a key regulator of corticocortical connections in the developing cerebral cortex.
Mutations in the SATB2 gene are associated with isolated cleft palate (CPI).
