Target Information
Isoform 1 functions as an extracellular chaperone that prevents aggregation of nonnative proteins and stress-induced aggregation of plasma proteins. It inhibits amyloid fibril formation by several proteins (APP, APOC2, B2M, CALCA, CSN3, SNCA, LYZ variants) in vitro, maintaining them for refolding by other chaperones such as HSPA8/HSC70. It does not refold proteins directly but facilitates degradation or refolding pathways. Secreted isoforms protect cells from apoptosis and complement-mediated cytolysis, while intracellular forms regulate ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation, modulate NF-κB activity, and influence apoptosis and cell proliferation.
