Background
Contactin associated protein 1 (CNTNAP1) is a human protein initially identified as a 190-kD component associated with the contactin-PTPRZ1 complex. The 1,384-amino acid protein, also known as p190 or CASPR (contactin-associated protein), includes an extracellular domain with multiple protein–protein interaction motifs, a transmembrane domain, and a 74-amino acid cytoplasmic region.
Northern blot analysis shows predominant expression in the brain (6.2 kb transcript) and weak expression in other tissues. The extracellular domain architecture resembles neurexins, suggesting that CNTNAP1 may act as the signaling subunit of contactin, facilitating intracellular signaling in neurons.
