Background
Chloride voltage-gated channel 1 (CLCN1) is a member of the CLCN family of voltage-dependent chloride channel genes, which includes nine members (CLCN1–7, Ka, and Kb). These genes share significant sequence homology but exhibit diverse functional characteristics.
The CLCN1 protein regulates the electric excitability of the skeletal muscle membrane. Mutations in this gene are associated with two forms of inherited human muscle disorders: recessive generalized myotonia congenita (Becker type) and dominant myotonia (Thomsen type).
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
