Background
The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is part of the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance. It functions as the major canalicular bile salt export pump in humans. Mutations in this gene cause progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, a group of inherited disorders leading to severe cholestatic liver disease from early infancy.
