Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RL18A gene encodes a member of the L18AE family, part of the 60S subunit, and may interact with the hepatitis C virus IRES, contributing to viral replication. The gene is co-transcribed with U68 snoRNA within the third intron and has multiple processed pseudogenes dispersed throughout the genome.
