Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. This gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S24E family. It is located in the cytoplasm and has multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Mutations in this gene can cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome. (RefSeq, Nov 2008)
