Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins forming mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
