Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein that belongs to the EcoL2 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 12q, and alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
