Background
Tight junctions are one form of cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial or endothelial sheets, forming continuous seals that act as barriers to solute and water diffusion through the paracellular space. The protein encoded by this immunoglobulin superfamily gene is localized in tight junctions between high endothelial cells. Unlike other family members, this protein does not adhere to leukocyte cell lines and only forms weak homotypic interactions. It belongs to the junctional adhesion molecule (JAM) family and acts as a receptor for another family member. Mutations in an intron of this gene are associated with hemorrhagic destruction of the brain, subependymal calcification, and congenital cataracts. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants.
