Background
Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is a key enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain that catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water. Subunit I (COX1) serves as the catalytic core of the enzyme complex, transferring electrons from cytochrome c via copper A and heme A centers to the bimetallic heme A3–copper B center.

4 ferrocytochrome c + O₂ + 4 H⁺ → 4 ferricytochrome c + 2 H₂O
