Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) is responsible for transferring high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes: sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK, encoded by separate genes. MtCK occurs in both dimeric and octameric forms, unlike cytosolic creatine kinase isoenzymes which are exclusively dimeric. Sarcomeric MtCK shares 80% homology with the coding exons of ubiquitous MtCK. The gene contains sequences homologous to motifs shared among nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, suggesting a role in coordinated activation during mitochondrial biogenesis. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
