Target Information
Tight junctions are specialized structures that mediate cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial and endothelial layers, forming continuous seals around cells to regulate paracellular permeability. Claudin 6 is a component of these tight junction strands and belongs to the claudin family. It functions as an integral membrane protein and serves as one of the entry cofactors for hepatitis C virus. Gene methylation of Claudin 6 may play a role in esophageal tumorigenesis. The CLDN6 gene is located adjacent to CLDN9 on chromosome 16.
