Target Information
Spectrins are principal components of the cell membrane-cytoskeleton and consist of two alpha and two beta spectrin subunits. The SPTBN2 gene encodes spectrin beta non-erythrocytic 2 (βIII spectrin), which is related to but distinct from βII spectrin (SPTBN1). SPTBN2 stabilizes the glutamate transporter EAAT4 at the plasma membrane surface, playing a key role in glutamate signaling. Mutations in this gene are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 5 (SCA5), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive locomotor incoordination, dysarthria, and uncoordinated eye movements.
