Target Information
Bromodeoxyuridine (5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine, BrdU) is a synthetic nucleoside and an analogue of thymidine. BrdU is widely used to detect proliferating cells in living tissues. It incorporates into newly synthesized DNA during the S phase of the cell cycle, substituting for thymidine during DNA replication. Antibodies specific for BrdU enable detection of incorporated BrdU, indicating cells actively replicating their DNA. Binding of the antibody requires DNA denaturation, typically achieved by acid or heat treatment.
